Robert Hampson was the singer / guitarist driving late eighties band Loop. When that band split in 1990, Hampson and Scott Dowson regrouped as Main, dragging the use of the guitar to ever greater levels of abstraction and increasingly incorporating the use of musique concrete methods.

Chasm sees Hampson continue his experimentation with concrete / contact microphone recording, but paring away his (un)usual layered guitar-drones and shaping his material in a more hip-hop influenced, beat-based structures. Having previously released just a single track as Chasm on a Lo compilation ('Further Mutations', 1997), Robert released further material on a split 12" (April 1999) and an 'e-rmx' 7" and provided support for Sigur Ros' on their 2000 UK tour.
