Avey Tare

Biography

Avey Tare is the alias of David Portner, a founding member of the Animal Collective. Avey Tare first came to light on the 'Spirit They're Gone / Spirit They've Vanished' album he recorded with Panda Bear and initially released on their own Animal label in 2000, and which was described by TimeOut NYC as "the discovery of the year...". Since then, Avey Tare has been an integral part of each of the collective's recordings, and this 12" represents his first solo release.

Far from a simple or stable 'band' proposition, Animal Collective is an umbrella name used for a grouping of four people - Avey Tare, Panda Bear, Geologist and Deaken - who play together in different configurations and whose releases are prone to continual musical change: from beautifully skewed pop ballads to fiercely ruptured noise-squalls, tribal rhythmic work-outs and simple folk songs.

Animal Collective's 'Sprit They've Gone...' was released as part of a double CD on FatCat in October 2003. In May 2004, FatCat released 'Sung Tongs'.In April 2007 he released a record with is wife Kria Brekkan titled 'Pullhair Rubeye'. Also in 2007, with Animal Collective he released the 'People' EP and, with hisdeal with FatCat ended, he and Animal Collective signed to Domino.

In 2009 with the band he released 'Merriweather Post Pavillion', their ninth studio album, which has topped many end-of-year lists in influential music publications and broadsheets. In December '09 they also released the 'Fall Be Kind' EP on Domino. In 2010 he released his solo record 'Down There' on Paw Tracks.
